Brian McLaren and Idolatrous Peace Marches

“In recent years, I’ve come to feel more than ever the potential of worship to form us as agents of peace –and as witnesses for peace. When we gather for worship, we pray for peace. We sing of God’s passion for reconciliation. We celebrate forgiveness and peace, not revenge and division. We preach about the Prince of Peace….But this Friday, I think all of us will be more aware of what a profound and revolutionary thing it is to come together in the peace of God and to be sent in the world once again as instruments of God’s peace.” — Brian McLaren, “Peace Week,” God’s Politics Blog

McLaren opens his post by informing us that he’ll be part of the March 7 Christian Peace Witness for Iraq. And this is where the Christian Left makes us pull our hair out. How can the Left cite Isaiah and Micah against injustice and then warm-up to interfaith demonstrations? Would Isaiah share the stage with Baal worshipers to appeal to Yahweh? The Christian Peace Witness for Iraq principles notes: “Join us to fill houses of worship, pray for peace, and hear anew God’s call to us. Grounded in Christian worship, those in Washington will process to the Capitol and be joined by brothers and sisters of other faiths for an Interfaith Peace Witness.” Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs call on whom for peace? Jesus Christ? Some amorphous, unitarian deity? What does this witness to observers? Is Yahweh pleased to share His glory? “I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another” (Is. 42:8).

At the end of this post, McLaren recommends, “if you would like to take a few minutes for a simple meditation on peace, check out this YouTube video.” And in that video (at approx. 00:43), we see a man raising the placard, “No one is my enemy, none a stranger and everyone is my friend.–Guru Arjan Dev: AG 1299.” Jesus hugs the Roman Empire? Christians are supposed to meditate on this? No wonder the Right hates peace talk.

In the end, the Christian Left offers us the same idolatry as the Christian Right. Remember Billy Graham at the National Cathedral? Why is this so hard? You can’t fight unjust wars with Baal worship.
